Get into Teaching

Get into Teaching Days with Wolds Teaching School Alliance will allow you to gain a  wealth of experience in the classroom by observing experienced and highly skilled teachers actually teaching.

The purpose of these days is to give you some practical experience of life in the classroom and working with young people. We don’t just want you to sit at the back of the classroom though! The benefit of being involved in these days is to allow you to reflect on the teaching practice that you observe and use this to better your own understanding of what the career entails.

Our next Get into Teaching Days are 5 June and 6 June 2017 (09:00 to 16:00), at South Hunsley School & Sixth Form College, Malet Lambert and Hunsley Primary. If you would like to join us, please sign up using the form below.

The Programme

We have a programme structure for the first 3 days, but you are welcome to do more days if you are able to!

The structure for these days is:

Day 1 – Learning Environment

The aim of your first Get into Teaching Day is to gain a better understanding of what it is like to be in one of our classrooms. The day will start with a short talk on the key thinks we are looking for in applicants and how to apply for School Direct through Wolds TSA. You will then be immersed in outstanding practice within your own subject area or key stage of interest. The focus for your observations will be on the learning environment and how teachers question different students to ensure that they make great progress.

Day 2 – Behaviours for Effective Learning

We understand that behaviour can be a worry for some people considering a career in teaching! The aim of this day is to look at how to work with our lovely students and ensure that the behaviour displayed in the classroom is the right one for effective learning. You will spend a day looking at and reflecting on the strategies used by experienced teachers to ensure excellent behaviour for effective learning.

Day 3 – Planning, Assessment and Actual Teaching!

The focus of this day is on the long, medium and short term planning followed by teachers. The key to this is accurate assessment of pupils and the progress that they are making. You will spend a day looking at and reflecting on the planning and assessment tools used by experienced teachers to allow students to make fantastic progress.

Finally, we want you to dip your toe into the exciting world of teaching by delivering a short plenary at the end of one of the lessons, giving you a great opportunity to reflect on not only what you have seen but also what you have done.
